The Freshman 15 refers to weight gain that may be experienced by first year students; research substantiates a 5 or 6 lb gain…the 15 is for drama!
Now that every meal is a buffet… it may be a challenge to eat only as much as your body needs. One of the keys to using this type of meal service is to eat as though you are buying the food al la carte. If you were in the grocery store, what would you choose? If you were ordering off a menu, what would you choose?

1) Get one plate of food at a time - Your eyes are almost always bigger than your stomach; its easy to feel ‘so hungry’ that you just know that you’ll need more than one entrée, but it usually isn’t so. Instead of wasting food by getting too much, get some food, finish it, then decide if you really need more. Prevent waist and waste!
2) Eat slowly It takes a while for your stomach to register that you’re full. If you eat fast, when your stomach tells you that you’re full, you’re stuffed.
3) Reduce stress! You may know that many tend to overeat when they’re stressed. Take breaks from studying. Talk with friends. Listen to some music. Exercise at the ARC! Also, try to get enough sleep.
4) Choose low-fat options! The DC has so many great choices for low-fat food. It’s up to you to choose them! Try low-fat or non-fat dressing. Get frozen yogurt instead of ice cream. It’s really not that hard! |
